The Basics of Building Green
These days the buzz word is green—what does it mean to build green? It means to improve the comfort and energy as well as a healthier quality of living. All of this, plus by building green it impacts the effect on the environment.
Location, location
Location used to mean being on the best waterway so you could taking your large boat for a spin any time you wish. With building green in the 21st-century, location means being located near all of the amenities and necessities you need for living a green lifestyle. Building in an established area near schools, mass transit and all of the shopping venues you’ll be using on a regular basis is the key.
By conserving the landscape of the natural environment of the land you’ll build on—you’ll disturbed less of the natural environment. By repurposing soil from the site you’re able to reap the benefits of a natural environment without simulating anything unnatural. During the construction process, it is key to preserve trees and natural features of the site without disturbing the natural habitat of animals and other species living there. Next, by chipping wood and brush that are to be cleared from the site anyway, you’re able to utilize them as mulch. Not only does it save on cost, but it also helps preserve the basics.
Star Rewards
Building green isn’t just about the exterior capabilities of a green environment; it is also about the interior facets of any green facility. In order to reduce energy consumption, many vendors now carry Energy Star appliances, lighting and necessities such as windows and doors.
Reduce, Reuse. . .
Building materials are now being created from recycled and salvageable materials such as stone and cotton. Not only does this help the environment, but it fuels local economies and stimulates the reduction of the effects on the environment.
Conservation Nation
A major basic in building green is conservation—not just of the materials, and fundamentals for building a facility but of those that are necessary for a facility to function—like water. In an effort to reduce the water consumption, many green builders have began to use composting toilets, front loading washers and using rainwater for lawn maintenance as well as flushing toilets in the facilities.
The basics to building green are still being discovered. While keeping an open mind, the environment has begun to thrive from these basics already discovered. Without wasting, always reducing and being mindful of the disposal are truly the basics to building green.
